David Sorensen

 

 

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1937, David Sorensen studied architecture with Arthur Erikson, at the University of British Columbia and fine arts at the Vancouver School of Art with Jack Shadbolt. In 1962, he won a Theo Koerner Foundation Travel Grant to study in Mexico, where he learned bronze casting and had his first solo exhibition. Returning to Canada in Montreal in 1967, he taught art in various CEGEP programs, at the Saidye Bronfman Centre, and at the Montreal Museum School of Fine Arts and Design. In 1976 he moved to the Eastern Townships where he built a solar house and his studio. He taught at Champlain College, then at Bishop's University from 1981 until he retired in 2000. He was awarded Professor Emeritus, Bishop's University, in 2002. Sorensen has exhibited his artworks internationally (Basel, Paris, Milan, New York, Boston, Chicago,Tokyo, Manila, Hongkong, across Mexico), and was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 1996. He maintains studios in Montreal and Ayer's Cliff, Quebec.
